I’m An Idiot

I’m working late at my office on Friday night.  It’s a six story building and my office is on the fourth floor.  There’s a call center that works until midnight in one of the adjacent buildings.  Most everyone has cleared out of the entire complex by 12:15 AM including the lone security guard.  I’m here this late because I like things quiet.  That’s why I thought it strange to hear someone entering the fourth floor stairwell into this otherwise empty six story building at 2:15 AM.

The cleaning people occasionally hang around until 10 PM on weekdays, but on Friday they almost always finish their work early.  So, I hear some clanging around and then it sounds like a vacuum cleaner running (?).  I dismiss it as the cleaning people working late even though I knew they were in my office around 6:15 PM today and had already vacuumed.  Additionally, I can’t recall one time in the past twelve years that I’ve heard them working this late.

Then I hear drilling.  Drilling at 2:20 AM?  What the heck?  Now I’m thinking someone’s robbing the place.

If I ignore it and discover on Monday that they drilled into the attorney’s office next door and stole the safe or something like that then that’s not acceptable, so I can’t ignore it.

If I walk out there at 2:25 AM and confront them then either they get away or I get into a physical confrontation with them.  I used to be a student in a martial arts school where you’d walk in and there’d be strangers in the class that day and we’d put the grappling gloves and a cup on and start fighting.  I broke the ribs of a 3rd degree black belt who trained students in a competing school while sparring in our school and the owner of my school seemed to revel in it.  Personally, I never fully understood physical fighting even when I was fighting.  I’m competitive as long as it’s healthy to do so.  I’d fight for a cause or to defend someone; there’s honor in that.  Fighting for ego is not my thing (anymore) and that’s why I left that martial arts class.

So, anyways, now I’m looking in my rolodex to see if I have Al’s number.  Al’s the CFO of the office complex and he’s onsite five days a week and I talked with him this morning, so I thought I’ll take a shot at calling him to see if by chance there’s a reason for someone being here at 2:30 AM; but, I can’t find the number.

So, I figure I should call 911 and that’s what I did.  They asked if I was in danger and I said no.  I said it sounds like there’s some drilling going on in the office next to mine at 2:30 AM and I’m guessing someone’s robbing the place.  I said I’m going to walk outside and I’m about to feel like an idiot if it’s the cleaning people, but I still don’t know why they would be drilling at this hour.  The building is locked so I waited to be informed that the police were on the property and I was going to exit my office into the hallway to go down the stairwell and let the cops into the building.  I walk out of my office and see a long heavy duty extension cord and follow it around the corner to see that it is connected to a commercial floor scrubber.  It was the cleaning crew.

Like I said, I’m an idiot.

United States Default?

The cost of buying protection against the risk that the United States will default on its mounting debt has surged in the past months, outpacing the rise in corporate-credit costs, now that the government has absorbed more private-sector debt.

The spreads on credit-default swaps for U.S. government debt jumped to 97 basis points Tuesday, nearly seven times higher than a year ago and 60% higher than the end of last year, to a level roughly in line with those of France, according to data supplied by Markit. The spreads also hit a record last week.
