Tips from a ex-collector

I used to work for a collection agency.  I hope this advice helps some of your readers.  Call at the beginning of the month just to get information about the account, but do not give them any information.  Do not agree to pay anything at that time.  The information you will want to get is the balance owed and how long they have had the account.  Collectors are paid a salary plus commissions.  Do not make an agreement to pay when you call at the beginning of the month.  That is the time when they are least likely to offer you a deal.  At the beginning of the month they will try to get payment arrangements or post dated checks.  Do not agree to pay anything at that time.  Call again in the last few days of the month and agree to settle the account in full for a fraction of the balance only if they will fax you a signed statement outlining the agreement.  At the end of the month the collection company is trying to make its quota as the employees are paid commissions.
